Why do we love this case?

This is the summit, mofo. The ‘Best in Class’ of the wine world. Wines beloved by the experts and novices alike. The wines that turned even the haughtiest of critics into star-struck fanboys and girls who mysteriously ‘forget to spit it out’ during a high-brow tasting panel. The concept behind this pack is pretty simple; there’s only one condition to entry - a 95 point or higher award. The vast majority need not apply. We already separate the wheat from the chaff here at the ‘fo. This is the artisan stonebaked masterwork that results.

Each case contains TWO bottles of each of the following:

The universally-adored Lou Miranda shiraz is back with a roar for the 2018 vintage. Still unmistakably Barossa, still as ferociously opulent as the name ‘Golden Lion’ suggests. This year’s season produced juice of incredible quality, loaded to the brim with dark berries, plums and dramatic spices. Maturation in American oak gives both delightful toastiness and a fabulously creamy and coconut-rich finish. It’s big, bold, and ballsy drinking to sink your teeth into at important family get-togethers. This beast will cellar for a decade or more, easily. That’s no reason to shy away from opening it though. We’re betting this lion won’t stay caged for long.

Argentina is rightly famous for malbec, but they’re far from the only string to its bow. Variety is the spice of life, they say, and they do some damn good things with cabernets (amongst others) there, too. Not ready to abandon malbec completely, though? How about a compromise? Mix it up with a malbec cab franc blend.

Old vines add a certain special something for several key varieties, grenache being one of them. This wine is sourced from 50-80 year old vines still on their original rootstock in the Barossa Valley. The result is low yields leading to greater concentration of flavours such as raspberry, strawberry and cola, buoyed by striking minerality that begets a freshness on the palate. Bethany Wines have always done us well, and we reckon the pros are beginning to catch on to a good thing. Just look at the scores!

Maybe we’re throwing a bit of a curve ball with a Coonawarra cab franc, but then again maybe it’s just right. Those knowledgeable in all things cabernet will know that cab franc is one of the major grapes blended with cab sav to make the great reds of Bordeaux. Then, factor in that the icons at Penley in Coonawarra have crafted it, and it doesn’t seem such a stretch after all. And the wine? Vibrant and juicy, spicy and floral. It’s ready to go now but still has some fine tannins to allow for a few years of ageing. We’re loving this wine and are confident you’ll be delighted with it as well.

Haselgrove has to be one of the most consistently excellent wineries in McLaren Vale. Many of their wines get scores in the high-90s year after year and we reckon this wine may have the same fate, so were happy to get in before the reviews. The flavour’s there and the points will come. This one is McLaren Vale to a tee with all the dark, ripe berries, chocolate and spice you could want. It’s full-bodied and absolutely delightful. Trust us, mofo, this stuff is awesome.

Take one portion cabernet and one portion tempranillo, blend them together, and bottle them up. Seems like an odd combo (or at least one you don’t see very often), but France and Spain do share a border. Bordeaux, the home of cabernet, isn’t too far from that border, and of course tempranillo is grown throughout Spain. So perhaps this blend was inevitable. Hastwell and Lightfoot have done the job of hitting the high notes for both grapes. Blackberry and cedar show off the cab side and allspice and leather show off the temp. All in all, this is a great example of creating something greater than the sum of its parts.
