Black Market Selection
We love our Black Market Deals, but it can be a bloody hard choice choosing just one. We’ve done the hard work for you with this case, curating a selection of our top 6 wines that we reckon are too good to skip past. No tricks, just great wines that won’t bankrupt you in order to enjoy them. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t want to tell everyone about the goodies in this pack, but you’ll just have to wait until it hits your doorstep. In the meantime, we’ll be over here sampling through a case (or two).
Each case contains ONE of the following:
McLaren Vale, SA
96pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | 4.1 Stars Vivino | Vegan-Friendly | Mofo Fave Producer
This shiraz is from a dead-set McLaren mofo fave - a customer fave and a staff fave. We can’t reveal who they are, but we can say that they are famous for bold, firm and concentrated reds that are truely some of the best in the region.
This 2018 shiraz starts with blueberries and plums on the nose, followed by a pretty perfume. The palate is all McLaren with dense red and black fruit, richness and abundant tannin. It’s as intense, as complex, as high quality, as powerful as you are going to find, with all of that fruit supported by roasted nuts and spices, and super dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is indeed bold, but not overwhelming, as tannin dances with fruit, acidity, earthy notes and a long and moreish finish.

95pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim
This is quintessential dry-grown Barossa and Eden Valley shiraz. Their winery is certified biodynamic and hand harvested with only the best fruits used! It’s dark and brooding in fruit profile, rich in tannin and spice, and carrying underlying secondary complexity with a smooth texture. We LOVE this wine and it’s got the points to prove it!

Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Margaret River, WA
96 Patrick Eckel | 94 James Halliday | 94 Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | 5 Red Star Halliday Rated Winery
This isn’t an ‘every vintage’ wine. The producer only makes it when the conditions are right for something special. Seems to us most every vintage is special in Margaret River, so you know this producer is very discerning when they’ll skip a year in the region. This is that sort of cabernet that just keeps coming at you with detail after detail: black olive, blackberry, cocoa, cedar, graphite and violet just to get started. Some spice and tannin on the finish round out the experience, letting you know that when the tough choice had to be made whether or not to make this wine in 2019, the winemaker chose wisely.

Shiraz Cabernets 2019
McLaren Vale, SA
95pts Sam Kim | 95pts Wineshowcase | 5 stars Sam Kim
It’s safe to say this wine is a ‘shoe-in’. Multiple vintages of this exact vino have rushed into our warehouse and zoomed straight back out and to your front door faster than you can say ‘shiraz blended with cab sav and a splash of cab franc’. It’s so SO popular with our thirsty mofo members. At its core, we have all the plush dark berries, plums and chocolatey goodness that you’d expect from McLaren Vale. But the blend of cabernets is what lifts this drop way above entry level, firm tannins and a liveliness on the back palate provide wonderful length and serious structure; perfect to pair with your good old fashioned Sunday roast lamb with all the trimmings.
YOU’D PAY $40 full price.
Pinot Noir 2014
Central Otago, NZ
The grapes for this beautiful pinot were harvested by hand and even after seven years, exhibit bright primary fruit characters in the wine. Think plums, cherries and strawberries. Of course those secondary notes have also sprung forward with a bit of char, dried herbs and mushrooms. There’s a nice mineral line as well, finishing off what is a complete expression of Otago pinot with some age on it. This one is delicious!
YOU’D PAY $39 full price.
Barossa Valley, SA
98pts Winestate Magazine | 94pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | 5 Red Star Halliday Rated Producer
Old vines add a certain special something for several key varieties, grenache being one of them. This wine is sourced from 50-80 year old vines still on their original rootstock in the Barossa Valley. The result is low yields leading to greater concentration of flavours such as raspberry, strawberry and cola, buoyed by striking minerality that begets a freshness on the palate. We’ve had previous vintages of this wine and loved it, we reckon the pros are beginning to catch on to a good thing. Just look at the scores!
YOU’D PAY $32 full price.
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
