When Wood Park in the King Valley asks us to come around and taste a few bottles, we come running. He’s a gun with the usual suspects from the region - sangiovese, pinot grigio and, of course, prosecco - but also one of the few that makes shiraz and cabernet fit to stand alongside some of that nation’s best. This classic Aussie blend is medium-bodied, bright, ripe with plum and cassis, and finishes with fine, fine tannins.

The secret’s out, New Zealand pinot is taking the wine world by storm and we’re all for it. From the unique climate of Waipara Valley springs this masterfully balanced drop. Hand-picked fruit from Torlesse’s vineyards in the valley makes this a winner. We’re not sure whether to get more excited about the dark, brooding red fruits or the attractive florals that bounce from the glass. Thanks to the region’s slow ripening conditions, there’s intensity and structure to make this a mighty fine wine.

Now THIS is good wine! And it’s from the legendary Powell & Son out of the Barossa Valley - Icons of this iconic region if you will. It’s bright and juicy, with elegant tannin and layered complexity. The palate’s exploding with blackcurrant and raspberry compote, sweet red cherries and licorice. The splash of mataro adds a delightful medicinal undertone to this one - wine tonic for all your ailments. It’s plush enough for the winter, and will take a quick chill in the fridge well over summer. This wine is for getting the party started!

Another year and another glorious vintage of one of our absolute favourites. We are still wondering if this “Golden Hillside” is an actual place, or a mythical place of the gods. The riesling from the Hillside is nothing short of heavenly, and the price suggests some sort of divine intervention. Plus, however high the vineyards of Clare Valley can get, surely those planted on celestial slopes are moreso. How else would you get such an otherworldly balance of drool-worthy lime and sunshine-soaked lemons, refreshing minerality and cloudlike complexity? The bottle definitely says Clare Valley though. Maybe heaven is a place on earth after all?

We’ve all been patiently waiting in anticipation, twiddling our thumbs in readiness to pounce on the great Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2020. But greatness cannot be rushed and the wait is well and truly worth it and well and truly OVER! This is our best quaffing Coonawarra Cab. So approachable and, unlike many a Cabernet, ready to be enjoyed in its youth. Medium bodied yet dark in colour and plush berries over the palate, you can expect all the hallmarks and uniqueness that put Coonawarra on the map. Smooth texture and well integrated tannin work well alongside generous dashes of soft spice and a finish that’ll have you grabbing the bottle and investigating all the specs for yourself. Your wine journey isn’t complete without sampling all the Penley Estate has to offer and we feel this little gem is the best place to start.

This is the answer to all of your midweek quaffer conundrums. Want a high quality shiraz without breaking the bank? Mitolo have you covered. Boasting all the dark fleshy plums and blackberries you can poke a stick at, with subtle but lingering black olive and chocolate nuances long after your final gulp. A texture that’s smoother than Barry White and a lingering liveliness on the back palate ensures pleasurable quaffing from now right through the next few years. It’s an easy-going medium-bodied drop with surprising balance, depth of flavour and length.

The Limestone coast region is famous for reds, but if this pinot gris from Reschke is any indication, it’s also a ripper region for aromatic whites. This is beautifully perfumed, gorgeously lifted and wonderfully fruity. A cool, elegant acidity drives the experience with poise and grace. The finish is long and lingering. It’s miraculous wine for your money, and we think you’ll agree.

Ready for some fun in the sun? Don’t forget a few bottles of this! It’s bright, crisp and fresh French fizz that’s perfect for a day at the beach with your mates. Lemon and peach lead the charge, buoyed by hazelnut, elderflower and even a touch of butteriness. An easy, relaxed glass of bubbles when the focus is simply on the good times.

Chilean sauv blanc are a bit like those from WA. The fruit is tropical and the acid is bright, but there’s a modicum of structure that reminds the drinker that this isn’t NZ lolly water. That acid and structure also make the wine perfect for pairing with seafood of all sorts. So grill some prawns, bake some salmon, poach some yabbies, it all works well.

This Argentinean beauty in a bottle is rich, ripe and robust, delivering plenty of bang for your buck. It’s the perfect weeknight quaffer - one that’s going to pamper you on the palate - not punch you in the hip pocket. And it’s from former Argentine Red Winemaker of the Year Hervé Fabre, so you know it’s gonna be a ripper.

The Yarra Valley is such a powerhouse for chardonnay and this wine, made by the fantastic Rob Dolan, shows you why. It has complexity and yumminess at the same time, as fruit and acid dance together on the palate. Green apple, grapefruit and stone fruit are all there in this light-medium bodied fresh and delicious wine.

Sweet, sweet nectar. This is all we want to drink to finish off a good meal (to be honest, we'd have some with breakfast if it was acceptable to do so). Winemaker Mark Walpole is often inspired by wines of the world, this one in particular influenced by the renowned sweet wines of the Jurançon in South-West France. There's a unique trait to these wines, as they have been harvested late, meaning all the flavour and sugar has been concentrated on the vine. As it starts to raisin, you get those beautiful notes of lychee and pineapple, with zesty acidity to support the viscous body. Some toasty notes give this wine a slightly savoury edge, along with gentle spices from time in oak.
