Tabali Talud Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
- Textured, savoury
We’re ecstatic about Tabalí here at the ‘Fo. It’s the first time their wines have been in Australia (as far as we know). Their chardonnay was the initial attention grabber (trust us when we say that South America is doing some incredible stuff with chardy right now) but once we tasted the entire range, we were smitten. They have three main vineyards spanning the width of the narrow country of Chile. Talinay is their tiny coastal vineyard and the source of chardonnay and pinot noir that sits amongst the best in the world. Dom is in the Maipo Valley and a great location for elegant and cellarworthy cabernet. Finally there’s Río Hurtado, situated at 1600 metres as you head up the Andes. From this vineyard comes malbec, although made famous in Argentina, sees some of the best yields from this plot in Chile.
Talud (Spanish for slope) is 100% cabernet from Dom, a vineyard with colluvial soils and southern aspect at an altitude of 320 metres. Hand-harvesting and individual grape selection kick off the production of this wine. Fermentation takes place in small tanks before the juice is sent to French oak for 18 months. Upon pulling the cork, you’ll find an elegant nose, one boasting freshness and black fruits. The oak is surprisingly subtle, providing more in structure than in cedary input. Blackcurrant, black cherry and baking spices are the primary notes on the palate, finishing up with silky tannins and delightful length. Chile is capable of producing world-class cabernet and this wine certainly proves it.
The Wine Advocate
“The 2017 Talud Cabernet Sauvignon was produced with fruit from their DOM vineyard in Maipo, from which they now also present a new bottling that carries the name of that vineyard. Their three Cabernet Sauvignons come from this vineyard, but they have different personalities since they select the grapes by soil. This has a minty character that I often find in the Maipo Cabernets. It's juicy and expressive, tasty and unmistakably Chilean. It has great freshness for a warmer year.”
